“One woman’s trash is another’s treasure” - a short guide to swishing

By Katherine Blyth of: http://katherineb.com

I have been so grateful for my warm, silver padded jacket during the recent cold snap. It’s just perfect – practical AND looks great. But the best bit ….it didn’t cost me anything. I found it at a “swishing” event along with a rose print, 50’s style skirt that is simply divine. So what is “swishing” and how can you get in on the action?

1. What? “Swishing” is the American term coined for clothes swapping. Twiggy brought it to our attention in a recent BBC 2 program: “Twiggy’s Frock Exchange”. You simply find or host an event, take along some unwanted clothing or accessories, and swap them for the equivalent number. So, for example, you can swap 3 items for 3 items - no money required.

2. Rules? You have to remember that you are getting the equivalent number of ITEMS irrespective of their VALUE. So if you donate a Prada gown that cost you thousands, you run the risk of coming away with a Primark bargain. At organized events you also have to be prepared to let your item go whether you end up choosing anything else or not.

3.Where? Anyone can organize one of these events. There is a comprehensive pack available from the BBC website www.bbc.co.uk/thread/twiggysfrockexchange. Keep an eye out for any local “swishing” events in your area.

4. How? The key to a successful “swish” is to have a wide variety of clothing, footwear and accessories in a range of sizes. It’s no good if everyone is getting rid of their size 8 hipsters that they can no longer squeeze into. It is best if there is a central collection point and a team responsible for sorting the garments. I would recommend only having items relevant to that particular season and also to be strict and refuse anything that is past it’s best. You want pieces that are going to be popular – otherwise you will be left with a mountain of rejects to dispose of.

5. Advice? Don’t just rummage around the rails that contain your dress size. Take this opportunity to hunt out sumptuous fabrics, trims or details that can be transformed into something wonderful. Make contact with a clever seamstress, or even fashion student, who is a dab hand with a sewing machine…or even have a go yourself.

6. Can’t find an event? Simply get together with a group of friends who are similar in size, shape and taste to you. It is a great opportunity to get rid of any items that don’t fit or you don’t actually like. As an Image Consultant, I come across many wardrobes that are stuffed full of unwanted purchases. As I said in the title: “one woman’s trash….”

Happy Swishing!
