by Uta Langley of www.inmotioncoaching.com Stress related illnesses are now one of the main reasons why people are signed off from work. Stress is a personal matter – what excites one person, stresses another. What may irritate you might amuse your partner. As stress is always subjective, you need to define your own way of dealing with it. This article will give you some tools to take the stress out of your life. Try them out and use what works best for you. 1. Be clear about what is really important in life. Write down your goals both professionally and personally and align these two aspects of your life. Only 3% of the population write down their goals – and research has shown that people who write their goals down are much more likely to achieve them. So writing down your goals will not only reduce your stress levels it will also help you to succeed. 2. Get moving When we get stressed, adrenalin is produced in our bodies which will put us in a state of high alert to either fight or flight (in the old days that was). When chained to a computer these two reactions which would get rid of the adrenalin are not furthering your career. One exercise that you can do when in front of your computer is to put your hands underneath the chair seat and pull up with your arms while pressing your body weight down. Another option when you feel the juices are boiling is to just leave the scene and go for a fast walk or go up and down the stairs in your office block – anything to get rid of the adrenalin. Long term exercise is essential to stay relaxed – and that doesn’t have to be in the gym. Swimming, walking, dancing, tennis, yoga – anything that you like and that gets you physical. 3. Check your diet How many cups of tea or coffee are you drinking? Are you drinking enough water (no beer does not count as water)? How much sugar do you consume? Do you get enough fresh fruit and vegetables? Why is diet important? If your body is busy digesting and transforming unhealthy food there is less energy available for the rest of your life. Water is crucial as 70% of your body or so is made of water. 4. See things in perspective When we are within a situation that stresses us we lose perspective of how important this is in the big scheme of things. One question I ask myself when I get stressed about things is “How important out of 10 is this when looking at it in 10 years time?” The answer is mostly 0-2. So I calm down and get on with things. 5. Breathing The quickest way to calm down is to breathe slowly in and out. Breathe slowly in through your nose counting to five and out through your mouth counting to seven. Repeat three times. Breathing also gives the body and brain oxygen which allows you to think creatively again.
