I have to admit to having a soft spot for Mayfair. Whether it's a leftover hankering for always wanting the most expensive property spot on the Monopoly board, or just its general proximity to both the fabulous shopping emporium of Fortnum and Mason and the peaceful haven of Green Park, I am not sure. But spending a night at one of the coolest hotels in Mayfair certainly gets me smiling. Flemings ( http://www.flemings-mayfair.co.uk) , just a stone throw away from Green Park station, is an understated but luxury hangout for London's uber and urban chic. A plethora of mirrors in the lobby, corridors and even our room gave the hotel a light, bright feel far removed from the neutral (read boring) tones that so many hotels adopt to play safe. Despite an up to date colour scheme and materials, our room still retained a 1930s glamour puss feel that made me want to sprawl on the bed and eat chocolates from a ribboned box like a black and white movie heroine of that era. And sprawl would be the word...it was luxurious to have so much space in a central London venue. Flemings may have a dress code, but it's the sort of place you'd want to dress up for dinner anyway. The Grill, tucked away in the basement, set a stylish tone before the food even arrived. My starter was a work of art - Heritage beetroots, young goats cheese, betroot vinaigrette: it literally looked too good to eat. My companion's starter of proscuittio, mozarella and figs was perhaps a little crowded. He would have been happy with less on the plate, but it was delicious nevertheless. For main, my companion chose pork cheeks which he described as tender enough to melt in his own cheeks. My venison was done to perfection, just the right amount of pink, and served with a smoked roll of mashed potato that added a subtle extra dimension. I'd like to tell you about our desserts, but we were so full we only managed coffee. Absolutely perfect for West End stay, whether it's a full on tourist tramp, a shopping spree or sneaky evening away together, Flemings comes highly recommended. |
