Gentleman's Afternoon Tea

I have always had a fondness for afternoon tea. You would be forgiven for thinking that I like the delicate sandwiches and inevitable selection of pretty cakes, but what I enjoy most is the variety...that opportunity to have my cake, eat it, and then reach for another.

So, when I heard that the Sanctum hotel in London's Soho was launching a gentleman's tea I was interested to see what they had chosen to entice the male of the species.

First off, I have to say that the theatre-land location of the Sanctum makes it a great spot for a pre-show tea. The restaurant has a definite gentleman's club feel, but bright modern art on the walls prevent it from being too masculine in feel. At first I thought I had found another great haunt to take clients, but after a while realised that the music was too loud for that, so a definite social venue this one.

So, what about the food?

Our first course of steak sandwich, salmon and cream cheese beigel and oysters with a bloody mary relish was presented beautifully on a granite slab. Portions are definitely bigger than you'd get in a traditional afternoon tea, but there's not as much in the way of selection.

Our "mains" met with much more approval:hot beef & horseradish served in mini Yorkshire puddings, mini burgers, rabbit and pancetta pies to mention a few. Each one was delicious, impeccably presented and only surpassed by dessert which was double baked chocolate fudge cake with whiskey ice cream!

After tea there's the opportunity to sip a double Jack Daniels and enjoy a cigar on the roof terrace.

Price is £50 for the standard tea or upgrade to £80 for a tasting series of Jack Daniels and cigar. Served daily from 2-6pm. Overall, an unusual pre-theatre treat or post shopping reward for your blokie!
