by Uta Langley of www.inmotioncoaching.com. Many people these days complain about not having enough time to do all the things they like to do and have to do. People get stressed or feel overwhelmed by the amount of projects, tasks, meetings, e-mails and changes. Home life just doesn’t feature in the work/life equation! Do you forget things? Do you often prepare at the last minute? Do you have to wade through piles of paper to find the documents you want? Does your in-tray contain a time bomb that you know is waiting to go off? If any of this sounds like you, it is time to get organised! Here are some ideas that you may have seen and heard before, you might even have implemented some of them before, but you are not practising them on a regular basis any more: Know what you are getting organised for What is important to you? What is not getting enough attention in your life right now? Health, family, fun, strategic matters, people development? Plan the next day the evening before Before you finish work, make a list of your priorities for the next day. This has two advantages: your unconscious can do problem solving overnight and you can start straight away the next morning rather than wondering what to do and ending up going through your e-mail. And whoops – it’s lunch time! Keep your e-mail in-box to 20 e-mails I have seen in-boxes with 1200 e-mails, which means you sift through some of them each time you open your in-box. You sift again when looking for a specific one. You also feel the burden of unfinished business which will sap your energy. File them by topic/project if you need them or better delete them. Empty your brain Many people keep all the actions in their head – not a good storage space. Make a list of all the things you promised you do, you want to do, you think you should do. Get it onto paper, then you can look at the list and evaluate, sort and plan. Learn to say NO Be aware of disruptions – they are other people’s top priorities. Learn to politely but firmly say no and PLAN when to respond to requests on your time from other people (yes, I know it isn’t always possible especially when the boss wants something, but when you make it a habit it is possible more often than you think).
