We've seen them You Are What You Eat and read about them in the food columns. Authentic Goji Berries from Tibet have been all over the media in recent months and some exciting claims have been made about their efficacy. But what are they really? * Whilst Goji Berries are grown through much of the Himalayan region, the Tibetan variety (Lycium Barbarum) is considered the best and most authentic. * They grow naturally in Tibet but their popularity in the USA and Australia (and now the UK) means demand will outstrip supply in the future. * They are vine grown without fertilisers or chemicals, hand picked and naturally sun dried without additives or preservatives in the pristine atmosphere of the high Himalayas. * The Tibetan Government and Tibetan Medical College certify those Goji Berries originating in Tibet and they are fully traceable. These organisations have overseen the planting of 2,500 hectares of Goji Berry vines which will fruit in 2008, thus creating an important new industry in the region. * The organisations also work to ensure that growers and pickers enjoy a fair return for their labours. ..And here's the healthy bit.... Goji Berries contain 500 times more vitamin C than oranges. They look like a red raisin and taste like a cranberry crossed with a cherry. Goji Berries have more beta-carotene than carrots, have five times more iron than steak and are a good source of vitamins B1, B2, B6 and E, anti oxidants, 18 amino acids, proteins and polysaccharides. They have a high zinc content and 21 trace minerals. They also taste very good! All these properties have led to newspaper claims that this super fruit will enhance sexual drive and fertility, fight cellulite, combat cancer, prevent wrinkles, boost energy, fight heart disease, lower cholesterol, fortify the immune system, fight infections and improve vision. Long-lived Tibetans call them happy berries, consume a handful a day and even rub them into their skin. Tesco led their introduction into the UK, selling 250g packs for £8.99 and Waitrose is due to commence stocking in January. Tibetan Authentic recommends consumers to eat just a small handful a day (about 25g) sprinkled on breakfast cereals, added to yogurt, as a hot drink alternative to tea and coffee or eaten direct from the pack. |
