By Deanna Derbyshire The title 'Author of Erotica' sounds exciting and maybe you have aspirations to focus your imagination on this genre and are ready to set pen to paper. If you are, then I hope these basic tips will help you on your journey. Just Imagine No matter what type of books you read yourself, when you are reading you will notice that you are 'seeing' in your minds eye, the story as it unfolds. This is your mental imagery at work, your visual interpretation of the characters, plot and story as it unfolds. Your brain is where all stimuli are converted into 'arousal'. So naturally, when you write a story, the focus is always directed toward stimulating the sensory imagination of your prospective readers. Writing is Easy isn't it? Good writing at any level, in any genre, demands preparation, focused thinking and often, some agonising moments in order to produce something of quality. There are some writers, who may be exceptions to this, but generally, it is very difficult to sit at your keyboard and tap out a best seller on your first attempt. If you give your writing the time and thought it deserves, you will hold your readers attention and inspire their imagination. Discover Writing Skills. There are many website resources for writers, where you can learn how to create ideas, construct stories and develop characters, with advice on how best to format and present your writing. These resources are for writers of all genres and offer excellent advice and guidance. There are also a number of community forums for writers where you can communicate with new and experienced authors, swap information, ask for feedback or even present your work for review. This may help you hone your writing skills, even if on general topics or storylines, rather than erotica. Do Your Homework Decide which erotica genre you want to base your stories on and who you are writing for. I began by writing mainly sensual, romantic erotica, only because I found it difficult to type some 'erotic' words with my eyes shut! I am a little more adventurous now that I have gained a confident 'voice'. So, how adventurous do you want to be with your story lines, plots and language? How adventurous do your potential readers want you to be? If you have knowledge or experience within a particular genre, then write about what you know, as this will give you a good quality story with a 'truth' element. It will also be far easier and quicker for you to write. However, your stories don't have to be written from experience, provided you are able to research your themes and convey a 'reality' for the reader. Market research will help you discover any gaps in your potential marketplace or help you discover a unique or 'different' voice. Prepare to Write Writers often have an optimum creative time; some are early morning writers, some late night writers. Some authors have a structured plan for each story, descriptions of characters etc, others don't! You do whatever fits your personality and preferences. Find your optimum creative time, gather your research, your thoughts and ideas, your plan if you have one, and begin. Don't stress about the plot or think about the ending or start counting words. Relax, let your creative imagination flow and simply write one word after another. You can always make revisions once you have reached the end. Review your work. Every author approaches their writing differently, my preference is to 'see' in my mind the story as I write it, like a film. The potential drawback for any writer, I believe, is that, as they already know the story from their plan or minds eye, they actually miss small but vital bits out as they write. This is due to the brain making assumptions in the course of events and suddenly you can have a naked man between the sheets, although he actually hasn't taken his socks off yet in the story! Men do take their socks off don't they? Reading your work back, out loud, is the usual advice for locating omissions or areas for amendment. Amend and finish, pat yourself on the back and let a trusted friend or two review it for you. Gathering Ideas If your imagination is as active as mine, you will be presented with titles and story ideas every day, so just take the pressure off yourself about having to think up new ideas. A notebook and pen are handy for jotting down ideas when you are out and a friend says something during innocent conversation which sparks off a storyline. Your poor friends! Finally Enjoy being creative, explore your mind and research the minds or lives of other willing beings. Relax, take your time and just do it. Don't be Shy – Be Sensual!
