Now, it seems men are getting in on the act and in some cases, doing it better. Nick Hornby has had three of his novels (High Fidelity, About a Boy and Fever Pitch) made into successful movies, and writers like Hornby and Tony Parsons have become household names.

Michael Adams is living the life most married men with kids only dream about. When he has had enough of sleepless nights, baby sick and a stressed out wife, he announces that he has to work through the night in his studio. This is partially true, but his 'studio' is in a flat shared with three other blokes. Waking up at three in the afternoon for breakfast in bed, followed by computer games and trivia quizzes is not unusual. He also fits in a bit up work, but not enough to keep up with the mortgage repayments. Unsurprisingly when his wife finds out she is not best pleased, and Michael's life spirals out of control.

Simon's Opinion: The only problem I have with this book is that it feels as if the author has climbed inside my own head and stolen the book that I should have written. The passages relating to how his relationship with his wife changed with the arrival of his first child were painfully funny. His strategy of dealing with bad or unpleasant news by completely ignoring it until it blows up in your face had me squirming uncomfortably in my chair. However the book does not just consist of glib humour, it was also quite moving in places, and I found myself caring about the main character. I would recommend this as the definitive book women should read to try and get an understanding on how man's mind work. Unreservedly recommended.
