Many diets don’t address the emotional and mental aspect of being overweight and being slim. Many women are in a constant cycle of yoyo dieting – losing weight, gaining it all back, going on another diet and so on. The main results are an obsession with food, counting calories or points, constant weighing and often really feeling bad about your self and your body, often leading to low confidence. Top 5 tips to losing weight without a diet: 1 Set yourself a positive goal rather than focus on what you don’t want (weight, chocolate biscuits). A positive goal might be “Be slim, fit and healthy”, “Fit into my red dress”. 2 Visualise yourself slim, fit & healthy. See, feel and hear how you would be like when you have achieved your target weight/goal. Make it a vivid picture with movements and sounds (how you look like, what you wear, you may be running or dancing, what people say/what you say to yourself). Visualise this image daily, also when exercising. 3 Eat when you are hungry, stop when you are full. Sounds easy and too simple, but many of us eat when it is time to eat, when food is around or wait too long. If you eat fast your stomach can’t actually signal that quickly to your brain that you have enough – so eat slowly and notice when you are full. STOP eating. Push your plate away. On the other hand, don’t wait too long to eat when you are hungry as it can lead to overeating. 4 Write a food diary. Everything that passes your lips (yes, that little piece of cheese, the left-over from your children’s dinner) goes into the diary. Analyse after a week – what are your critical times in a day? What are the patterns that keep you overweight? What foods do you eat a lot? After a week, change just one habit. 5 Before you eat, ask yourself “Am I hungry or do I want to eat for any other reason?” Reasons to eat could be you feel thirsty, bored, lonely, angry, or restless. If you feel anything else but hungry: do something else – call a friend, play some music and dance, go for a walk, sit down and relax, play with your kids, drink water.
