Best Man ![]() Best Man is the first novel by Matt Dunn, and he is obviously a man who has researched his target market, and he is aiming squarely at the undemanding holiday read with plenty of laughs along the way. On this basis I think it is fair to say that he has succeeded , the book is packed with one liners and wordplay, some a bit cheesy others plain funny. He also accurately captures the dynamics of male friendship that consists of constant piss taking. The plot revolves around a man’s attempts to dissuade his best friend from marrying a money grabbing humourless bitch but to go into further detail is a bit pointless as not a lot happens that is surprising, and when he tries to write anything vaguely profound it did not really work for me. However it did make laugh and the 344 pages did not drag, providing you are not looking for anything too deep Best Man comes recommended. There’s a website – www.ideas-for-books.com - you can just help yourself… Seriously though, I’ve always been fascinated by the dynamics of friendships and relationships, and I love reading books by the likes of Nick Hornby and John O’Farrell, who manage to write sensitively about life issues from the male perspective, but with a sense of humour. Hopefully, I’ve managed to achieve that too. As regards the idea for Best Man, I think we’ve all been in situations where we look at our friends and their partners and think “what does she see in him” or “what on earth is he doing with her”. Usually when they’re just dating you put up with it and then, once they (inevitably) split up, you can tease them about it afterwards. But I got to thinking, what if one of my friends suddenly decided that they wanted to marry the nightmare in question? Would I be able to stand by and just watch him go through with it? And if not, how on earth would I tell him what I thought? ![]() |
