Papageno

I'm a big fan of Sarastros in Covent Garden. I've dragged all my friends there and, indeed once upon a time, it was a bit of a test for prospective lovers - if they didn't immediately love the mad mix of operaticand theatrical deitrus that covers almost every inch of available space then I knew I was onto a loser.

So, I was pretty pleased to hear that Sarastro had opened a sister restaurant - and a bigger one at that - in Wellington Street under the name of Papageno. And the magic formula is the same - that same ecelectic mixture of sumptuous decor and theatrical artifacts; that same relaxed atmosphere and the same good solid menu.

And this time there's even a Coco Bar so you can soak up the atmosphere without having to dine.

But I would recommed dining. My partner had lobster - a dish he's usually more often than not disappointed with - but this one was perfect. And my Mediterrean lamb shank was delicious - tender in all the right places.

Finally the cheese plate was magnificent - much more than two people could ever hope to nibble through. We finsihed it off with a Turkish coffee but then had to rush off to see Noel Coward's Blythe Spirit - a shame actually as we would have loved to stay there longer and relax.

Papageno is at 29-31 Wellington Street, London, WC2
