Chick Lit Literary Chicks

There are some writers who, at the same time as delivering a great story, do it using language so evocative, pure and sometimes even lyrical, that they are a true delight to read. These are our literary chicks.

Phillipa Gregory is an established writer and broadcaster for radio and television. Her historical novels, which include Earthly Joys, Virgin Earth, A Respectable Trade (which she has adapted for BBC television) and The Other Boleyn Girl, have all been massively acclaimed.

In 2002 The Other Boleyn Girl won the Parker Romantic Novel of the Year Award. A BBC dramatisation of Gregory’s novel was broadcast recently to huge critical acclaim.

Philippa Gregory holds a PhD in eighteenth-century literature from the University of Edinburgh and lives with her family in the North of England. Philippa has her won website, including a reader's forum , at www.philippagregory.com.

The Virgin's Lover

Elizabeth is now queen, and facing tremendous pressure to take a husband and produce an heir. Only then, many believe, will she be safe. Available to pre-order now, this book looks as though it will be every bit as gripping as Philippa's other historical tales.

The Other Boleyn Girl

This was our first taste of Philippa Gregory's novels and we were hooked from the very first chapter. It tells the tale of Mary Boleyn, sister to the infamous Anne and manages to conjure up a dark image of a gossipy back-stabbing court. If you like costume dramas, you'll absolutley adore this.

The Wise Woman

Set in the period of The Reformation, Alys escapes from a nunnery which has been set on fire to find herself the only survivor. Alys is then seduced by a life of witchcraft and runs a deadly serious risk of being burnt alive for sorcery. Although not set in the faniliar courts of the tudors, this is still a big page-turner, right to the very end.
