Sophie Kinsella

Sophie Kinsella is a Londoner who studied politics, philosophy and economics at New College, Oxford and went onto become both a teacher and financial journalist.

The much-loved Sophie Kinsella, creator of the Shopaholic series, also writes under the name of Madeleine Wickham. Her first best-seller as Sophie was The Secret Dreamworld of a Shopaholic, published in 2000. It jumped to the top of the bestseller lists and introduced us to a new heroine in Becky Bloomwood, and one that is arguably one of chicklit's most endearing.

Since then Becky has come back in Shopaholic Abroad, Shopaholic Ties the Knot and Shopaholic and Sister. The latter novel sold over 450,000 copies of both hardback and paperback - a staggering feat!

Sophie has also had astounding success with her two non Shopaholic novels - Can You Keep A secret and, more recently, The Undomestic Goddess, as well as under her real name Madeleine Wickham with The Tennis Party - her first novel written, at the age of 24, whilst she was a financial journalist. And she has gone on to write six novels under her real name and only publicly anounced that Madeleine and Sophie were one and the same person when Can You Keep A Secret was published. Even her publishers of her own name novels, Black Swan, were unaware when they first accepted her Sophie Kinsella novel.

Sophie is married to a former opera singer and lives in London with her husband and two children. You can read more about Sophie here

Twenties Girl

I love the Shopaholic series, but it's always great to have something different from Sophie Kinsella and this is spot on (and is a great Xmas pressie for any chicklit loving friends). It's both funny and poignant, and had me dabbing away tears at the end.

Lara's is mourning a split from her ex, who she considers to be the love of her life, but when her great Aunt dies and comes back to haunt her with one last request, Lara's conventional life is thrown into chaos, and she finds love..in many shapes and forms.

Becky's back and this time it's the lovely world of baby clothes, accessories and equipment that proves tempting. But our heroine also worries that her new doctor, who happens to be her husband's ex from University days, is going to prove too tempting for him. As hilarious as usual - this is a great addition to the Shopaholic stable.
