by Jacqueline Burns If you’ve ever tried to write anything longer than a letter, you’ll be familiar with the humdrum business of writing: the struggle to settle, making endless cups of tea, and then finally – ah, bliss - finding your “flow”, when your fingers suddenly seem to fly effortlessly across the keyboard. As to whether or not you produce anything worth reading or publishing, however, well, that’s another story. The whole experience of writing is often not only full of doubt and worry, but also of loneliness. The romantic notion of being a writer in her garret all to easily becomes unappealing by the third day of talking almost exclusively to your own four walls. Literary agent Kirsty McLachlan and I founded London Writers’ Club in March 20009 because, with more than 30 years of publishing experience between us, we understand just how tough writing can be. We want the Club to help writers feel less alone and stuck, and more confident about taking their writing to the next level. London Writers’ Club will help writers in many ways: it will give them a space to network, to inspire each other and to hear from experienced writers and publishing professionals who can pass on the lessons and insights they’ve learned along the way. But mostly it’s an opportunity for writers to hang out with other writers, somewhere to talk to others in the same boat, to compare notes, to help each other out… We know about writing from every angle: I have worked in commissioning roles for several leading publishing houses, among them Random House and HarperCollins, and wrote the bestselling The Handbag Book of Girly Emergencies series. Kirsty is a literary agent with DGA, where she brokers deals to adapt books for television and film. In addition to London Writers’ Club, we run publishabestseller.com, a consultancy that offers advice to writers, and we’re also writing a series of e-books. Like most writers, both published and unpublished, I have several unfinished manuscripts gathering dust under my bed, and I’m hoping that London Writers’ Club will inspire me finally to make the time to complete them. Do come along to meet other London-based writers – and find out how you can write your own bestseller. www.londonwritersclub.com |
