Now I’ve had reflexology before, or I thought I’d had it before that is. In effect what I think I had was a masseuse massaging my feet and calling it reflexology. The real thing is a completely different story.

Angela Schroeder offers Indian head massage, Japanese acupressure (done at your desk, fully clothed) and reflexology – all from the comfort of your own home. Now I love going out to a salon or spa just as much as the next girl but sometime you just can’t fit it in, and having someone come to you at home is a lovely alternative (and probably cheaper anyway!)

We began my reflexology treatment with a quick diagnostic to make sure that I was ok for treatment, and then, with candles burning and gentle sounds coming out of Angela’s gorgeous silver IPod (Ooh, I was envious!) the reflexology began. As she worked Angela told me a little about what she was doing.
Reflexology is a form of 'alternative' or 'complementary' therapy involving a method of massage-like treatment to specific reflex areas found in the feet and the hands (but moiré often the feet). Treatment encourages the body to balance itself and to return to its natural state of equilibrium.
In the feet, there are many reflex areas corresponding to all parts of the body. These areas are arranged in such a way as to form a ‘map’ of the body in the feet with the right foot corresponding to the right side of the body and the left foot corresponding to the left side. By having the whole body represented in the feet, reflexology offers a means of treating the body as a whole. This is an important factor of a natural therapy and allows not only symptoms to be treated but also the causes of symptoms.

In realty this meant that Angela was able to pinpoint the fact that my neck was stiff and sore from too many hours spent at a computer screen that was set a tad too low (now remedied, thanks to a few old notepads!).

Although it could hardly be called painful, certain points do feel tender if their corresponding body parts are ailing, but the overall treatment was relaxing and pampering.

Angela did warn me, however, that those new to reflexology often experience a few “strange” symptoms the following day. After a night where I slept like a log for the first time in weeks, the next day I felt incredibly thirsty and even had to stop for a few hours in the afternoon to have a catnap. Interestingly I am sure that it was a sign of my body finally having its say and telling me what it needed and I’ve changed my habits since – trying to go to bed half an hour earlier, drink more water and take more breaks from the screen. And, just to reward myself for those good habits, will be treating myself with regular visits from Angela.
